About Us . . .

WEST MIFFLIN LIONS CLUB was sponsored by the Homestead District Lions Club through the efforts of Lion Martin A Yuhasz of the Homestead Club, and Deputy District Governor Joseph G. Ludwig of Oakland.  It received its charter from District Governor James L. Wrigley on October 26, 1953.  Lion Albert Savolskis, who later transferred to the Homestead Club was the first President, Lion Regis Ditmore was the first Secretary, and Lion Stanley Duda was the first Treasurer.

The Club started to sell brooms, light bulbs, and other items to raise money, and operated on a budget of $600 the first year.

In the next three years membership increased from the 58 it was chartered with to 101, but the Directors started dropping members who missed four dinner meetings in a row, so that by the late 60’s the Club was down to 45 members.  In 1970 Duquesne Lions Club disbanded and six members transferred to West Mifflin.  On the other hand, when the Whitaker-Munhall Gardens Club disbanded, none wanted to join the Club. During the 60’s and 70’s the Club averaged 65 members, and then peaked at 94. There were still 11 Charter Members in 1985.  At the present time the Club has 68 members.

The Club has had five District Governors: Cornelius McConville and James W. Hartman which were members and trasferred members Martin A. Yuhasz (Homestead District), W. Pryce Jenkins (Pittsburgh Oakland), and Theodore Turocy (Wintersville, OH).

In 1985 the Club had six fund-raising projects: White Cane Day and Blind Seals being the most profitable. The Club generously supports Lions Charities, and since funds are raised in West Mifflin and Duquesne, a good portion is spent in the communities for worthy causes.
